Mercedes-Benz is reportedly considering sourcing engines from BMW,according to recent reports in the German press. This potential move comes as Mercedes re-evaluates its powertrain strategy following a shift in its timeline for transitioning to fully electric vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz currently produces its own 2.0-liter (M264) and 1.5-liter (M260) four-cylinder engines for longitudinal applications, and a transverse version (M260). These engines have been in production since 2017 and are used in the company’s compact and medium-sized vehicle segments.
the potential decision to utilize BMW engines is believed to stem from a previous strategic focus on all-electric vehicles, which led to reduced investment in the growth of future internal combustion engine (ICE) technology. With Mercedes now planning to maintain ICE offerings for a longer period, the company may face a gap in its engine portfolio. BMW engines may not fully address all market needs, especially in regions sensitive to engine origin.
Should the reports prove accurate, mercedes-Benz could face reputational challenges, shifting from a competitor in engine engineering to a buyer from one. While BMW engines are considered technically sound, the move could be perceived as a setback for Mercedes-Benz’s engineering independence.
