Fake Online Store Redirects to new Site After 1News Inquiry
A website mimicking a New Zealand boutique, Matakana Boutique, has ceased operating it’s fraudulent storefront and is now redirecting users to a newly branded online store, canberra Muse. The change occurred within 24 hours of being featured in a 1News report on Thursday, October 26, 2023.
The original site, which sold clothing and accessories, drew complaints from Auckland-based boutique owner Hope, who operates the legitimate Hope boutique. Hope reported that the fake store was using her product photos without permission and creating confusion among customers.
Canberra Muse, which claims to be “brand built in and for” Canberra, Australia, is utilizing the same product layouts, pricing structures, and stock imagery as its predecessor.Domain registration details indicates the domain was purchased on August 8, 2023, and is hosted on servers located outside of New Zealand and Australia. The registrant’s details are currently obscured.
Hope expressed cautious optimism about the advancement, stating to 1News that while the redirection is ongoing, she hopes the fraudulent website will be permanently removed. She noted the impact of the fake store on her buisness, with customers mistakenly ordering from the imposter site.
