Qi2 Wireless Charging Standard Unveiled, Promising Faster Speeds and Universal Compatibility
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has officially launched its new Qi2 wireless charging standard, branded as Qi2 25W. This advancement aims to streamline the wireless charging landscape by introducing a host of improvements, including faster charging speeds of up to 50 watts, though 25 watts is expected to be the initial norm.
A key feature of Qi2 is its improved magnetic alignment, ensuring phones achieve maximum charging efficiency and speed. This magnetic system also guarantees compatibility between different devices and all Qi2 25W accessories. Furthermore, Qi2 offers backward compatibility, meaning Qi2 25W devices will function with existing Qi and Qi2 chargers, albeit at reduced speeds.
currently, 14 products have received Qi2 certification, encompassing 3-in-1 chargers, power banks, and car mounts from brands such as Anker, Aukey, Baseus, Belkin, Ugreen, and Scosche. Hundreds more products are awaiting certification. Notably, the WPC has announced that major android smartphones will join the Qi2 ecosystem for the first time with this launch, alongside Apple iPhones. Specific iPhone models and Android phones are yet to be identified. While the number of Qi2-certified phones is currently limited, the WPC is also introducing the concept of “Qi2-Ready” phones. These devices are capable of charging at Qi2 speeds but lack the integrated magnetic array. To function as Qi2 devices, they must be paired with Qi2-Ready cases that incorporate magnets.
The rollout of Qi2 devices is anticipated to be gradual. Before any product can display the Qi2 or Qi2 25W logo, it must undergo certification in the WPC’s self-reliant laboratories. the MPP Qi2 specification rigorously tests charging rates, magnet strength, and device compatibility, with the Qi2 logo serving as a guarantee of adherence to the WPC’s stringent standards. However, as with the original Qi standard, devices not officially certified may also become available.
Apple’s iPhone 12 to 16 series already supports Qi2, and accessory manufacturers like Anker, Belkin, Nomad, Mophie, and Baseus have released Qi2 wireless chargers and power banks. A meaningful wave of Qi2 25W accessories and phones is expected to follow, with Android manufacturers anticipated to fully embrace the standard later this year or in early 2026. The WPC’s goal is for Qi2 to unify wireless charging and establish a universal global standard.
