Malema Offers Mkhwanazi Spot in EFF Amid Police Controversy

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has extended a public invitation to KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to join the political party.

The offer was made during the EFF’s 12th anniversary rally held in Khayelitsha on July 26. Malema lauded Mkhwanazi for his firm stance against political interference and corruption within the police force.

“General Mkhwanazi, if they fire you for standing against corruption, the EFF has a place for you,” Malema declared to a large gathering of supporters.

Malema also reiterated the EFF’s consistent advocacy for Mkhwanazi’s appointment as the national police commissioner, highlighting his perceived integrity and professional history.

Mkhwanazi recently garnered meaningful media attention following accusations he leveled against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. Mkhwanazi alleged that these officials were hindering investigations into politically motivated killings.

in response to these allegations, president Cyril Ramaphosa placed both Mchunu and Sibiya on special leave and initiated the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry.

Public Divided Over political Invitation

the invitation from Malema has elicited a range of responses from the public. Some observers believe that Mkhwanazi, a seasoned career police officer, is unlikely to align with the EFF’s political ideology.

Conversely, others have welcomed the gesture, interpreting it as a exhibition of support for an individual who has spoken out against corruption and is reportedly facing political pressure.

Future Uncertain as Contract Nears End

Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi’s current contract is scheduled to conclude in December 2025. It remains unclear whether he will accept Malema’s offer or continue his service within the South African Police Service (SAPS) amidst the ongoing political tensions.

Will Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi accept Julius Malema’s invitation to join the EFF?
