Ishiba Vows to Stay in Power to Tackle U.S. Tariff Threats

Ukraine braces for renewed Russian offensive as peace talks remain stalled.

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, diplomatic efforts to achieve peace have hit a significant roadblock. Moscow has indicated it is indeed awaiting a specific date for renewed negotiations, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating, “There is our draft memorandum… There is a draft memorandum that has been handed over by the Ukrainian side. There is to be an exchange of views and talks on these two drafts, which are diametrically opposed so far.” This follows two rounds of peace talks held in Istanbul earlier this year, which, while facilitating prisoner exchanges, failed to secure a ceasefire.Russia’s refusal to relinquish occupied Ukrainian territory and its opposition to Ukraine’s potential NATO membership remain key sticking points.

Meanwhile, the United States is reportedly exploring avenues to facilitate the transfer of U.S.-made weapons to Ukraine through its European allies. This potential move, coupled with a recent sanctions threat against Moscow by the White House, coudl bolster Kyiv’s negotiating position. However, the immediate situation on the ground remains dire. Overnight into Monday, Russia launched approximately 450 missiles and drones into Ukrainian territory. According to Ukrainian President Zelensky, 23 of these projectiles, along with falling debris, struck civilian infrastructure, including a kindergarten and residential buildings, resulting in at least two fatalities and around 16 injuries.
