Iran warns of end to Europe’s role in nuclear talks if UN sanctions are reimposed – World

Iran Warns of Nuclear Deal Collapse if UN Sanctions Return

A top Iranian official is warning of dire consequences for European involvement in the Iran nuclear issue should the UN reimpose sanctions. Tensions escalate as talks loom.

Araqchi Sets Red Line

Abbas Araqchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, made it clear that reinstating UN sanctions would effectively end Europe’s role regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

JCPOA Clause Looms

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) includes a clause allowing for the reapplication of UN sanctions if Iran violates the agreement. The United States, under former President Donald Trump, exited the JCPOA in 2018.

Negotiation Parameters

Speaking with Al Jazera, Araqchi revealed Iran’s careful considerations regarding potential nuclear talks with the United States. He stated, “We are evaluating the timing, location, format, content, and the guarantees necessary for Iran in any possible negotiations.”

Araqchi clarified the scope of any discussions with global powers. Such talks would be “confined to Iran’s nuclear activities” and would exclude any discussion of its military capabilities.

Sticking Points

Araqchi emphasized that negotiations, should they occur, would be narrowly focused: sanctions relief in return for assurances regarding Iran’s nuclear intentions. “No other matters would be on the table,” he stated.

Despite stalled progress since 2022, indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran continue, primarily mediated by the European Union (Council on Foreign Relations).
