Key takeaways

  • Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has doubled her salary to more than 35,500 Soles (around 8500 euros) per month.
  • Her popularity is at a historic low of only 2 percent.
  • The new salary is 35 times higher than the Peruvian minimum wage of 1,025 soles per month (245 euros).

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte is under fire after she doubled her own wage through a decree. Her new monthly wage now amounts to more than 35,500 soles, good for around 8500 euros. The decision comes at a time when her approval figure has just dropped to just 2 percent.

The increase was defended by Minister of Economy Raúl Pérez Reyes. According to him, the new amount corresponds to what other heads of state in the region earn. Public opinion thinks differently. On social media, the measure was labeled as “unworldly” and “outrageous”.

Deep dissatisfaction among population

The salary increase comes at a time when Boluartes popularity reaches a low point. Only 2 percent of the Peruvians still support her. Recently her car was pelted with stones and eggs during a visit to Arequipa.

Boluarte came to power in December 2022 after the deposition of President Pedro Castillo. Her term of office is overshadowed by various scandals, including accusations about non-declared luxury gifts. She would also have left her post during a nose surgery.

Regional comparison

For the increase, the Peruvian president was the second lowest of twelve countries in the region. Only Bolivia paid his president less. With the increase, she now earns 35 times the Peruvian minimum wage of 1,025 Soles (245 euros) per month. (Em)
