Bitcoin Kidnapping Case Turns on Conflicting Evidence

Defense Claims Accuser Lived Lavishly During Alleged Captivity

A Manhattan kidnapping case involving a cryptocurrency dispute has taken a bizarre turn, with defense attorneys presenting evidence suggesting the alleged victim was far from a prisoner during the 17 days he claimed he was held against his will. The case highlights the increasing risks associated with the volatile world of digital assets.

Conflicting Accounts Emerge

William Duplessie, 32, and John Woeltz, 37, entered not guilty pleas Wednesday, facing charges of kidnapping, assault, and unlawful imprisonment. Prosecutors maintain the 28-year-old Italian national was subjected to brutal torture after being lured to a SoHo townhouse on May 6th with threats against his family.

However, Sam Talkin, representing Duplessie, argued that videos depict the accuser “laughing and smiling” while engaging in activities like group sex and smoking crack cocaine. The story that he is selling doesn’t make sense, Talkin stated in court.

Wayne Gosnell, counsel for Woeltz, added that witnesses claim the accuser freely came and went from the residence, attending church, clubs, and dinners. This contradicts the prosecution’s claim that he was under constant surveillance.

Prosecution Details Alleged Torture

Assistant District Attorney Sarah Khan countered that the defense is selectively leaking videos to create a false narrative. She described a harrowing ordeal, alleging the man was pistol-whipped, cut with a small chainsaw, and even threatened with being set on fire – though the flames were quickly extinguished, sometimes with urine.

Police discovered a loaded pistol, a chainsaw, and other potential instruments of torture during a search of the townhouse. Photographs recovered included images of the accuser with a gun pointed at his head, tied to a wheelchair, and appearing to be set ablaze.

According to the prosecution, this isn’t an isolated incident. Khan indicated they are investigating two other potential victims in separate locations, suggesting a pattern of behavior by the defendants.

Financial Motive and Cryptocurrency

The alleged kidnapping stemmed from a dispute over cryptocurrency. Prosecutors say the defendants repeatedly pressured the man to reveal his computer password to access his digital holdings. He ultimately complied, but his devices and funds have not been returned. A recent report by Chainalysis estimates that cryptocurrency-related crime cost investors $1.7 billion in 2023. Bail Denied, Flight Risk Questioned

The defense requested $1 million bail and home confinement with their parents, arguing their clients are not flight risks. He’s so far from a flight risk here. He’s ready to fight this case. He’s not going anywhere, Talkin asserted regarding Duplessie.

The defendants, appearing in prison uniforms, remained silent except to enter their not guilty pleas. They face up to life in prison if convicted. The next court date is scheduled for July 15th.
