UkraineS zelenskyy to Meet Swedish PM as New Arms Deal Expected
Linköping, Sweden – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Sweden today for talks expected to result in a new agreement for the provision of weapons to Ukraine, the Swedish government announced. the visit comes as Russian bombings overnight killed six people, including two children, according to Ukrainian officials.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Linköping, the location of Saab’s headquarters – the Swedish defense group that manufactures Gripen fighter jets, weapons systems, and submarines. A joint press conference is planned following the meeting to detail the defense export agreement.
“A strong and capable Ukraine is a key priority for Sweden, and we will continue to ensure that Ukraine can fight back against Russia’s aggression,” Kristersson stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
While Sweden previously paused plans to send Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine last year, following requests from partner nations to prioritize the delivery of U.S. F-16s, this new agreement signals continued Swedish support for Ukraine’s defense against the ongoing Russian invasion, which began in February 2022. The conflict has resulted in widespread destruction and a critically important humanitarian crisis, prompting international efforts to aid Ukraine and hold Russia accountable.
