Zelensky Open to Freezing Russia-Ukraine War Along Current Frontlines

Zelensky Open to Freezing Russia-Ukraine War Along Current Frontlines

October 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in an interview broadcast on Wednesday that Ukraine is prepared to halt combat operations along the current front line and freeze the armed conflict, accepting a temporary 25 percent loss of territory under Russian control, Portfolio.hu reported.

The Shift Toward Freezing the Front Line

Zelenskyy outlined the proposed shift in a broadcast on Fox News, noting that the move represents a realistic path to ending the ongoing hostilities. According to Világgazdaság, the arrangement would leave approximately 25 percent of Ukrainian territory under Russian occupation while the remaining 75 percent stays under Kyiv’s administration. Zelenskyy stated that stopping the bloodshed is the immediate priority, using terms shared by United States Donald Trump. “Now we must freeze the armed conflict, and I think this is a realistic way to end the war,” Zelenskyy said, as quoted by Növekedés.hu.

This stance marks a notable departure from previous official positions that insisted on restoring Ukraine’s full territorial integrity before any cessation of fighting. It was noted that while the arrangement leaves Russian forces in control of occupied regions, it does not constitute a formal legal recognition of Moscow’s sovereignty over those areas. The primary objective, according to the Ukrainian leader, is establishing a dependable ceasefire followed by formal diplomatic negotiations.

Diplomatic Maneuvers in St. Petersburg and Oslo

The announcement coincided with high-level diplomatic contacts involving United States special envoy Steve Witkoff. 444.hu reported that Witkoff held a three-hour meeting in St. Petersburg with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following discussions with Zelenskyy in Oslo a day earlier. During the St. Petersburg talks, Putin informed Witkoff that Moscow is prepared to resume tripartite negotiations involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia during the second week of November, Növekedés.hu added.

Donald Trump recently called on Ukraine to pursue a negotiated settlement, pointing to war fatigue among populations in both the United States and Europe. Building on that international pressure, Zelenskyy emphasized that any freeze in the conflict must be paired with firm security guarantees from the United States and European partners to prevent future aggression. He also stressed the importance of domestic recovery, noting that international assistance will be essential for rebuilding infrastructure and enabling the return of approximately 9.5 million displaced citizens currently living abroad, as reported by 444.hu.
