Young Adults & In-App Purchases: Rising Debt in Hamburg?

Hamburg, Germany – A recent survey conducted by the Hamburg Authority for Consumer Protection reveals a growing trend of financial hardship among young adults linked to in-app purchases within social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The study found that approximately 22 percent of Hamburg residents aged 18 to 29 have experienced financial difficulties as a result of purchases made directly within these apps.

The representative survey indicates that over half of individuals in this age group – 53 percent – have engaged in shopping activities within applications such as TikTok and Instagram. This contrasts sharply with older demographics; only seven percent of those aged 60 to 74 reported making direct purchases within social media apps, according to the consumer protection agency’s findings.
