Yemen Braces for Heatwave, Thunderstorms, and Coastal Turbulence
Sana’a, Yemen – Yemen’s National Meteorological and Early Warning Center is issuing urgent advisories as the nation prepares for a period of intense heat, localized thunderstorms, and rough seas. Forecasts indicate high temperatures across desert regions, potential flash flooding in mountainous areas, and turbulent conditions along the southern and eastern coasts, especially around the Socotra archipelago, the Gulf of Aden, and extending to the southern and eastern coasts.
The meteorological center warns that daytime temperatures in desert areas will soar between 40 and 46 degrees Celsius, accompanied by moderate to strong north to northeasterly winds capable of stirring up dust and sandstorms. concurrently, several governorates – including West Al-Jouf, Rima, sana’a, Al-Mahwit, Hajjah, Imran, and the Heights of Lahj – are expected to experience afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Coastal areas will be hot, humid, and relatively dusty, with a possibility of light rainfall along the eastern and southern stretches.
The center’s warnings specifically target seafarers, fishermen, and shipbuilders, cautioning them about the anticipated sea turmoil and significant wave heights. residents in desert and coastal plains are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours. Mountainous communities are urged to seek shelter during thunderstorms and remain vigilant for potential flash floods and torrents. Drivers are cautioned against attempting to cross ground bridges during and after rainfall events.
These conditions underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Yemen, where extreme weather events can exacerbate existing humanitarian concerns and disrupt daily life. Citizens are urged to heed all advisories issued by the National meteorological and early Warning Center to mitigate risks and ensure safety.
