From Gobi Desert too Green Steel: Bagang’s Transformation
For over seventy years, the fires of steelmaking have burned in the heart of Xinjiang, first forging a foundation for regional development and now, undergoing a remarkable transformation towards sustainability. bagang Company, initially built on the harsh Gobi Desert, is now demonstrating that industrial progress and environmental obligation can coexist.
The modernization of Bagang wasn’t simply a matter of acquiring new equipment, according to Li Ziwen. It involved a deeper commitment to understanding and implementing advanced technologies, and crucially, cultivating a skilled workforce. This focus on internal expertise has resulted in a team proficient in modern steel rolling techniques, laying the groundwork for future innovation.
Today, that investment is visible throughout the facility. Robots now conduct unmanned inspections within the blast furnace area, while a central dispatch center displays real-time data streams providing comprehensive oversight of operations. Workers operate the entire continuous production process remotely, safely distanced from the high-temperature and dusty environments. This clever production system is a direct result of Bagang’s commitment to green development.
That commitment is backed by notable financial investment.Over 3 billion RMB has been allocated to ultra-low emission transformation projects, achieving “zero emissions of wastewater and solid waste not leaving the factory.” The company has also prioritized green spaces, achieving a current greening rate of 51%.
Bagang’s innovation extends beyond emission control. The company has pioneered the world’s first industrial-grade hydrogen-rich carbon circulating oxygen blast furnace. This technology is capable of capturing approximately 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually – an environmental benefit comparable to establishing a 700 square kilometer forest in Xinjiang.
General Manager He Yucheng acknowledges the challenges facing the steel industry, but emphasizes the long-term viability of sustainable practices. “In recent years, the life of steel companies has not been easy, but we always firmly believe that only green and low-carbon products have a future.” Bagang’s products have all received green and low-carbon product certification, despite an increased production cost of over 200 RMB per ton of steel. He Yucheng believes this investment will ultimately secure market advantage.
Bagang’s steel is integral to regional and national infrastructure. Approximately 85% of the steel used in key projects within Xinjiang originates from Bagang, and the company’s products are also utilized in major national projects. The growing new energy sector in western China, particularly the wind power and photovoltaic industries, represents a significant and expanding market for Bagang’s steel, alongside international exports.
Even those who have witnessed Bagang’s entire history are struck by the changes. Zhang Ainian, a veteran of over 70 years, frequently walks through Bagang Park, reflecting on the transformation from a steel mill forged in the desert to a greener, smarter operation. The enduring fires of steelmaking continue, but now burn with a renewed focus on sustainability and innovation.
