Xiaomi 18 Series: Modular Lenses and New Foldable Rival
Xiaomi is developing a new book-style foldable smartphone scheduled for a debut around July 2026, according to reports from Chinese leaker Smart Pikachu. The device, which may be named the Mix Fold 5 or the Xiaomi 17 Fold, is intended to compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, as well as the Oppo Find N6 and Honor Magic V6.
The upcoming release marks Xiaomi’s return to the book-style foldable segment after the company bypassed a direct successor to the 2024 Mix Fold 4 during 2025. During that interval, the company shifted its primary focus toward clamshell designs, specifically the release of the Mix Flip 2.
Supply Chain Integration
A central component of the new device’s development is a strategic push toward supply chain independence. Reports indicate that the foldable will rely heavily on in-house developed components rather than international suppliers. Specifically, Xiaomi has developed its own hinge mechanism and camera lenses, a move intended to grant the company greater control over production timelines, device weight, durability, and photographic capabilities.
This shift mirrors a broader trend among Chinese manufacturers seeking to reduce reliance on external vendors to better manage component availability and product specifications.
Xiaomi 18 Series Developments
Separate from the foldable lineup, new details have emerged regarding the Xiaomi 18 series. These upcoming models are expected to advance mobile photography through the introduction of magnetic camera lenses and modular plus lenses. The series is reportedly slated to include dedicated functions tailored for vlogging.
If the July timeline for the foldable device is maintained, it would place the launch weeks or days before Samsung’s traditional late-summer Unpacked event, positioning the device as one of the first premium book-style foldables to reach the market in 2026.
