Xbox’s Bold Rebranding: How Matthew Ball’s Leadership Revives Legacy Brands & Strengthens Console Gaming

May 23, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Xbox has appointed industry analyst Matthew Ball as its new chief strategy officer, a move announced this week by CEO Asha Sharma. The appointment is part of a broader leadership restructuring within the division, which also includes the hiring of Scott Van Vliet as chief technology officer and the promotion of Chris Schnakenberg to corporate vice president of partnerships and business development. The leadership changes follow Sharma’s transition into the role of Xbox CEO in February, succeeding longtime Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer. In a memo to staff, Sharma stated that the organization has been working to evolve its internal operations and structure over the past 90 days. “We have a clear strategy, but we still have important work ahead as we turn that strategy into better products and stronger fundamentals,” Sharma said in the internal communication. Ball, widely recognized for his annual reports on the state of the video game industry, began partnering with the Xbox leadership team earlier this year. His official tenure commences this month, with a direct reporting line to Sharma. The restructuring coincides with a period of rebranding and adjustment for the division. Under Sharma’s direction, the unit has moved to rebrand from Microsoft Gaming to Xbox and has implemented price reductions for the Game Pass subscription service. These personnel decisions follow a series of organizational shifts aimed at refining the company’s focus on its core console business and the management of its gaming franchises. As the new strategy team settles into their roles, the company has indicated that further integration of its internal processes remains a priority for the coming months.
