WAYNESBURG, Pa.(Sept. 18) – The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team battled visiting Saint Vincent on Thursday evening, ultimately falling 5-2 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference matchup at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility.Despite several closely contested matches, the loss drops the Jackets to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The result highlights the competitive balance within the PAC as Waynesburg seeks to establish itself in the conference standings. The team’s performance, especially in singles play, demonstrates potential for growth as the season progresses. Waynesburg will look to rebound quickly with a home doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21, against La Roche.
Senior Julia Corey of Eighty Four, Pa., secured a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-3. Fellow senior Alli Bailey of New Brighton, Pa., also contributed a point for the Jackets with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No.6 position.
several other singles matches proved highly competitive. Sophomore Julia Umshares of Washington, Pa., pushed her No. 4 singles contest to a decisive third-set super tiebreak, ultimately falling 6-2, 6-7 (7-0), 10-4. Freshman Celeste Matsaudza of Boksburg, South Africa, captured the first set in a tiebreak at No. 1 singles but dropped the subsequent sets,6-7 (7-5),6-2,7-5.
In doubles play, Julia Luzar of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Taylor Stephens of Morgantown, W.Va., earned a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. Though, Saint Vincent secured the initial point by winning the no. 1 and No. 3 doubles flights.
