The Wikimedia Commons repository surpassed 130 million free-to-use media files in November 2025, according to data released by the Wikimedia Foundation. The milestone underscores the platform’s growing role as a central resource for images, audio, and video used across the internet, including by major media outlets and educational institutions.
Established in September 2004, Wikimedia Commons functions as a wiki-based repository, allowing registered volunteers to manage and edit its content. Files hosted on the platform are either in the public domain or licensed under Creative Commons, enabling free reuse with proper attribution. The organization added roughly seventeen million new files in 2023 alone, demonstrating continued expansion driven by volunteer contributions.
The repository’s content ranges from photographs of geographical landscapes to digitized collections donated by institutions such as the Smithsonian, NASA, and the British Library. In 2012, the National Archives and Records Administration contributed 100,000 digitized images to the Commons. More recently, the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) began uploading its collections, adding over two million files in 2022. Europeana, a website aggregating European cultural heritage, also shares digitized images through the platform.
In 2018, Wikimedia Commons expanded its capabilities to include the upload of 3D models, with a reconstruction of the Lion of Al-lāt statue – damaged by ISIS militants in Palmyra, Syria – among the first models added. The platform’s files are utilized across all Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, and Wikispecies, and are available for download for external use.
The Wikimedia Foundation’s Creative Commons licenses require users to provide attribution when reusing content, including the creator’s name, license type, and source. The organization offers a “Reuse guide” to assist users in complying with these requirements. A monthly photo challenge and the annual Wiki Loves Folklore contest further encourage contributions and engagement with the platform.
