An Italian man in his 40s was stabbed by his wife after a dispute stemming from a Serie A soccer match on February 22nd, according to local media reports. The incident occurred after SSC Napoli lost 2-1 to Atalanta, and the man’s wife reportedly misinterpreted his reaction to a controversial VAR decision as directed towards her.

The man, a Napoli supporter, reportedly became enraged when a penalty awarded to his team was overturned following a review by the Video Assistant Referee. He allegedly swore in frustration, prompting his wife to believe he was verbally abusing her. An argument ensued, escalating when the wife threatened her husband with a weapon and demanded he leave the house.

When the man refused to comply, the wife initially threw a pair of scissors at him, missing her target. She then retrieved a knife from the kitchen and attacked him, inflicting a stab wound. The man subsequently reported the assault to the police, but not before his wife allegedly continued to throw knives, some of which embedded themselves in the walls of their home.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested the wife on charges of domestic violence and aggravated assault. The injured man was transported to Ospedale del Mare Hospital, where his condition was reported as non-life-threatening.

The match itself saw Atalanta defeat the reigning Serie A champions, Napoli, 2-1. As of today, February 26, 2026, Napoli sits in third place in the league standings, trailing leader Inter Milan by 14 points, according to available reports.
