WASHINGTON – The White House on 2024/02/07 defended Admiral David Hogg, the commander of U.S. Southern Command, following criticism from former President Donald Trump regarding the military’s response to recent attacks by Caribbean-based pirates against commercial shipping in the region. The administration’s statement directly contradicted Trump’s assertions that the Biden administration was “weak” on maritime security and had allowed the situation to escalate.
The escalating pirate activity, primarily targeting vessels transiting key shipping lanes near the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Puerto rico, has prompted increased scrutiny of U.S. naval deployments and counter-piracy strategies. The incidents, which began intensifying in late 2023, threaten international trade and regional stability, raising concerns among shipping companies and prompting calls for a more robust response. The White House maintains that Admiral Hogg is executing a carefully considered strategy to address the threat, balancing the need for decisive action wiht efforts to avoid broader regional conflict.
According to Pentagon officials, the pirates, believed to be operating from bases in Venezuela and Haiti, have conducted at least six confirmed attacks since January 1, 2024, resulting in the hijacking of two cargo ships and the injury of several crew members. Trump, in a post on his social media platform, accused the Biden administration of “allowing these pirates to run wild” and claimed that a more aggressive approach under his leadership would have deterred the attacks.
“The President has full confidence in admiral Hogg’s leadership and the men and women of Southern Command,” stated White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during a press briefing.”Admiral Hogg is a highly respected and experienced naval officer who is implementing a comprehensive plan to protect maritime commerce and deter future attacks.” Jean-Pierre further emphasized that the administration is working closely with Caribbean nations to enhance their maritime security capabilities and address the root causes of piracy.
The White House’s defense of Admiral Hogg comes as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have begun to demand answers about the administration’s response to the growing pirate threat. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has called for a Senate hearing to investigate the matter, while Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS) has requested a briefing from the Department of defense. the Biden administration has pledged to cooperate fully with Congress and provide regular updates on the situation.
