WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames, Enhancing Privacy and Control
WhatsApp is developing a new username system designed to allow users to connect without sharing phone numbers, a move aimed at bolstering privacy and security. the feature will enable individuals to add contacts simply by knowing a username, eliminating the need to exchange sensitive phone numbers.
To mitigate potential spam and unwanted contact, particularly for public figures and businesses, WhatsApp is implementing a two-step authorization process. Users will not only need a recipient’s username but also a unique “username key” – a specific authorization code – to initiate a conversation. This consent-based system ensures dialog is only established with approved contacts.
According to WABeta.info, WhatsApp is planning to allow users to “reserve” their usernames prior to the feature’s global release. This preemptive measure intends to prevent username squatting and ensure a fair process for claiming desired usernames, especially for well-known individuals and brands.
The rollout is expected to begin with the reservation system, followed by the wider launch of the username functionality. WhatsApp anticipates this update will be one of its most significant changes in recent years, offering users increased control over their privacy and digital security.
