WhatsApp Bolsters Features Amid Rising Popularity of Indian messaging App Arattai
New Delhi – WhatsApp is rolling out a suite of new features – including support for live photos (iOS) and Motion Photos (Android), AI-generated backgrounds for video calls and media, native document scanning on android, and enhanced group search – as competition in the Indian messaging market heats up with the growing adoption of homegrown app Arattai.
The updates aim to enhance user experience and maintain WhatsAppS competitive edge. Users can now share photos with integrated motion or sound, adding a dynamic element to chats. AI-generated backgrounds are available for video calls and when capturing photos and videos within the app, offering a creative visual option.
Android users gain a built-in document scanner, eliminating the need for third-party applications to scan, crop, and share documents – a feature notably useful for students and professionals. WhatsApp has also improved group chat search functionality, allowing users to find groups by typing in the name of any member. New sticker packs, including “Fearless Bird,” “School Days,” and “Vacation,” have also been released.
While Arattai focuses on a localized, India-centric experience, WhatsApp leverages its massive global user base – exceeding two billion users – robust encryption, and integration within Meta’s ecosystem. The frequent feature updates are designed to counter emerging competitors and emphasize privacy and innovation.
Analysts note Arattai’s appeal stems from its simplicity, lightweight design, and targeted focus on Indian users. However, WhatsApp’s scale, stability, and comprehensive feature set continue to provide a significant strategic advantage. Meta’s ongoing investment in features like AI-driven personalization, enhanced media sharing, and improved usability demonstrate a commitment to maintaining WhatsApp’s position as a leading messaging platform.
