Webinar: Gender Transformation for Africa Supplement Launch – SRMH in Africa

New supplement Explores Gender Transformative Approaches in African Sexual and Reproductive Health

The Institute for Global Health and Development (UNU-IIGH) is pleased to co-host the launch webinar for a significant new supplement in the African Journal of reproductive Health. This initiative brings together leading researchers and practitioners to delve into the practical and operational aspects of gender transformative approaches (GTAs) within sexual and reproductive health services across diverse African settings.

This special edition, made possible through funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), features eight peer-reviewed articles. These articles are the product of the Gender Transformation for Africa (GT4Africa) cohort. The supplement is designed to bridge existing knowledge and practice gaps concerning the effective implementation of GTAs. It achieves this by showcasing rigorous, localized implementation research drawn from various African contexts.

By centralizing these research efforts, the supplement provides a crucial platform for understanding the underlying mechanisms and processes that drive successful gender transformation. The ultimate aim is to enhance sexual, reproductive, and maternal health (SRMH) rights and services for communities.

The collection is thoughtfully organized around three central thematic areas:

  1. Co-designing and Co-producing Gender transformative Approaches and Interventions: This section explores participatory methodologies and underscores the vital importance of involving a wide array of stakeholders in the design and execution of interventions.
  2. Collaborating with Community Health Workers and Peer Facilitators: Here, the research investigates the roles, capabilities, and strategies employed by frontline actors in implementing and sustaining GTAs at the community level.
  3. Engaging Men in Maternal Health Programmes and Incentives: This area analyzes innovative strategies to involve men in maternal health initiatives, challenge detrimental forms of masculinity, and cultivate supportive environments that promote gender equity.

the launch event is set to convene prominent researchers, dedicated practitioners, and a broad audience. The goal is to foster meaningful dialogue, not only about the research
