Washington Because of the blockade of the Corona aid package, the US state of Washington is stepping into the breach with support payments to those in need. Nearly 100,000 independent contractors, temporary workers and self-employed would be paid $ 550 per person over the coming week, Governor Jay Inslee announced on Sunday. The sum corresponds to benefits for a period of two weeks. The funds totaling $ 54 million will go to Washington State citizens who have previously received support under the pandemic program for the unemployed and were otherwise not entitled to it. This package expired on Saturday.

After a tough struggle, the Democrats and Republicans in Congress agreed on a new package, which the outgoing President Donald Trump has now apparently also signed, according to media reports in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. The aid program will be extended until March 14, 2021. Trump wants higher one-off payments than the $ 600 agreed by the parties, namely 2000. But the fact that Congress will quickly take so much more money into hand is politically excluded.
