Chance Knocks as WA Agrifood Businesses Connect with Buyers at China Expo
SHANGHAI – Western Australian agrifood and beverage companies have established new trade connections at the recent China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, marking a meaningful step for the state’s export ambitions. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Growth (DPIRD), in collaboration with the Invest and trade WA China Office, coordinated the ”WA Showcase” display featuring 24 local brands.
Participating businesses spanned a diverse range of sectors including wine, beverages, seafood, honey, horticulture, fibre, apparel, and packaged goods. DPIRD bolstered the delegation’s presence with a market retail tour, targeted business matching sessions, and informative briefings designed to foster lasting trade relationships.
This year marked WA’s fourth participation in the CIIE, which drew over 450,000 domestic and international buyers. China remains WA’s largest agrifood, fisheries, and forestry market, with exports valued at $3.14 billion in 2024-25.
“WA received a great reception from international buyers, who were particularly interested in our premium packaged goods offerings and seafood,” said DPIRD primary industries trade manager Joan Lim. “The China International Import Expo has once again demonstrated how vital this market is for us to tell our provenance story, build relationships with potential customers and lay the foundations to export growth.”
the expo was particularly significant as it was WA’s first exhibition in China following the lifting of trade restrictions on wine and lobster – products that garnered considerable attention from CIIE visitors.
The CIIE is one of several trade exhibition initiatives supported by DPIRD this year, alongside participation in HOFEX Hong Kong, Food and Hotel Asia Singapore, FOODEX Japan, and Gulfood UAE, all aimed at promoting WA businesses internationally.
