The U.S.Justice Department filed suit against Pennsylvania on Thursday, alleging the state’s refusal to provide complete voter registration data hinders a nationwide effort to ensure election integrity. this action follows similar lawsuits against California, Michigan, Minnesota, new York, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Maine in recent weeks.
The department claims Pennsylvania failed to adequately respond to requests for voter registration lists and data detailing the procedures the state employs to maintain accurate voter rolls.Federal law requires states to keep voter lists up-to-date and accurate, and the Justice Department is seeking to enforce these requirements.
“Clean voter rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. “Every state has a obligation to ensure that voter registration records are accurate, accessible, and secure - states that don’t fulfill that obligation will see this Department of Justice in court.”
An Associated Press analysis indicates the Justice Department has requested voter registration data from at least 26 states in recent months, seeking details on their voter roll maintainance practices. Pennsylvania is one of eight states currently facing legal action, all led by Democratic governors with the exception of New Hampshire, which has a Republican governor.
