Chloe Malle Named Next Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue
NEW YORK – Chloe Malle will succeed Anna Wintour as editor-in-chief of American Vogue, marking a historic shift at the iconic fashion publication after Wintour’s three-decade reign. The declaration confirms months of speculation regarding the succession plan for the 75-year-old Wintour, who will remain a significant presence within Condé Nast.
The transition signals a new era for Vogue, though not a complete departure from its established leadership. Malle, currently global head of Vogue‘s editorial content, brings a deep understanding of the brand and a track record of digital innovation to the role. While the exact timing of the handover remains unclear, Wintour will continue as Condé Nast’s chief content officer, overseeing Vogue‘s content alongside titles including GQ, Wired, and Tatler.
Malle has demonstrated a willingness to engage with contemporary political issues, mirroring a trait shared with her predecessor. She voiced disappointment following donald Trump’s 2024 re-election on her podcast, and previously participated in the 2017 Women’s March carrying a sign reading, “Keep Your Tiny Hands Off My Rights.” on the podcast, she sought the perspective of Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, asking him for advice for those “struggling this week.”
Despite the change in leadership, Wintour intends to maintain her office and extensive pottery collection.Malle acknowledged the potential challenges of working in close proximity to her predecessor, stating in a New York Times interview, “I know that some people who were interested in this job were sort of daunted by the idea of Anna being down the hall. I’m very happy she’s down the hall with her Clarice Cliff pottery.”
Lauren Sherman,a reporter with Puck News who first reported the story, noted Malle’s strong background and work ethic. “She’s still reporting to Anna Wintour, so the buck stops with Anna wintour,” Sherman told BBC News. ”I don’t think we’re going to see any big splashy changes to start, but let’s see how much she pushes back on Wintour and makes it her own.”
