USA Swimming Announces 38-Athlete Roster for 2026 Short Course World Championships
USA Swimming finalized a 38-athlete roster for the 2026 Short Course World Championships in Beijing, featuring 16 women and 20 men with 18 competitors set to make their global championship debut, swimmingworldmagazine.com reported.
Roster Changes Follow World Championship Trials
The roster release follows the conclusion of the 2026 U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials in Westmont, Illinois, which wrapped up on October 31, lapsandlanes.com reported. Not every athlete who earned a spot will make the trip to Beijing. According to swimswam.com, Claire Weinstein declined her roster spot to focus on training and recovery following a bout of meningitis over the summer. Torri Huske also declined her position, moving Phoebe Bacon into a Priority 3 slot after Bacon initially finished third in the 100 individual medley.
On the men’s side, the roster capped out at 20 total athletes, leaving Johnny Crush and Matt King off the official roster after the final night of competition, swimswam.com reported. Luke Barr and Anna Peplowski secured wild card selections that do not count against the official 38-athlete cap, according to swimswam.com and lapsandlanes.com.
World Record Holders Lead U.S. Team
The U.S. team enters Beijing bolstered by multiple reigning short course world record holders and Olympic medalists. Jack Alexy, Katharine Berkoff, Claire Curzan, Kate Douglass, Luke Hobson, and Gretchen Walsh lead the roster alongside 2024 short course world individual medalists Regan Smith, Kieran Smith, and Alex Walsh, according to USA Swimming’s official announcement. Caeleb Dressel also secured a spot on the men’s team, marking his first international meet for the United States since the 2024 Olympics, swimswam.com reported.
“This roster brings together an exceptional mix of experience and emerging talent,” USA Swimming National Team Executive Director and Coach Greg Meehan stated in the official release. “I’m proud of the team we’ve assembled after hosting the first U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials, and I look forward to the group rising to the occasion on the international stage.”

Global Championship Debutants
Eighteen athletes will make their first-ever appearance at a World Championships during the Beijing meet. The women’s debutants include Liberty Clark, Rylee Erisman, Katie McCarthy, Isabelle Odgers, Skyler Smith, and Camille Spink. The men’s first-time competitors feature Luke Barr, Brian Benzing, Josh Bey, Finn Brooks, Noah Cakir, Adam Chaney, Ryan Erisman, Grant House, Van Mathias, Owen McDonald, and Maximus Williamson, according to lapsandlanes.com.
Billy Doughty of DART Swimming will serve as the team’s head coach, marking his first senior-level international coaching appointment, USA Swimming reported. Doughty also serves as a member of USA Swimming’s Board of Directors. USA Swimming announced that it will name the remaining assistant coaching staff at a later date.

Priority Designations Determine Athlete Entries
Athletes secured their entries based on priority designations from the trials. Women’s Priority 1 selections feature Liberty Clark in the 200 freestyle and 4×100 freestyle relay, Kate Douglass in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, and 200 individual medley, and Gretchen Walsh in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, and 100 individual medley, according to swimswam.com.
The men’s Priority 1 group includes Jack Alexy in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 4×200 freestyle relay, Chris Guiliano in the 100 and 200 freestyle, and Luke Hobson in the 200 and 400 freestyle, lapsandlanes.com reported. The 2024 U.S. short course worlds roster led the medal table with 39 total medals, a benchmark this new squad aims to defend in Beijing.
