NUOTO, MONDIALI IN VASCA CORTA. A PECHINO 2026 LE FINALI CON 10 ATLETI

World Aquatics Short Course Championships 2026 to feature 10 lanes

October 28, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Ten individual lanes and a two-million-dollar prize pool await more than a thousand athletes when the World Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships begin December 1 in Beijing, nuotounostiledivita.it reported. The six-day meet brings world championship racing back to the Beijing National Aquatics Centre eighteen years after the 2008 Olympic Games.

Ten Lanes Rewrite the Format at the Water Cube

For the first time in a world championship, individual swimming semifinals and finals will feature ten lanes instead of the traditional eight. The experimental format applies exclusively to individual events, where the ten fastest semifinal times advance to the final race and earn finalist diplomas. Relays will continue to use eight lanes in both heats and finals.

Team scoring adjusts to match the wider fields. Points will be awarded to the top twenty finishers in individual events, ranging from 18 points for the winner down to a single point for competitors placing sixteenth through twentieth. World Aquatics confirmed in official event documentation that the ten-lane layout is a trial valid solely for the Beijing edition.

Beijing Schedule Differs from Italian Time

With Beijing sitting seven hours ahead of Italy, the daily schedule splits between early morning heats and midday medal sessions. Morning heats begin at 10:00 local time, translating to 3:00 in Italy. Semifinals and finals get underway at 19:00 in Beijing, which is 12:00 in Italy. Sunday, December 6, brings the single schedule adjustment of the meet, with the final session shifting forward to 18:00 local time and 11:00 Italian time.

Athletes qualify through standard times achieved between July 27, 2025, and November 15, 2026, at World Aquatics-approved competitions in either 25-meter or 50-meter pools. Standard A allows two entries per event, while standard B permits one. Individual entries close on November 17.

A second major structural change introduces wild cards through the 2026 World Cup circuit. Swimmers who secure and accept a wild card can compete in their designated event independently of the standard two-per-nation cap and outside the 26-athlete per gender limit per federation, allowing a country to field three competitors in a single race.

Prize Money and the Return to the Water Cube

The total prize purse reaches 2,025,000 dollars, split equally between men and women. The top eight finishers in every individual and team event collect payouts ranging from 10,000 dollars for the winner down to 2,000 dollars for eighth place, leaving ninth and tenth-place finalists without financial awards. Individual world records carry a 25,000-dollar bonus, while the Double Crown awards 15,000 dollars to any swimmer who wins the same event across all three legs of the 2026 World Cup and subsequently at the world championships.

The venue itself marks a homecoming. Built for the 2008 Olympics—where Federica Pellegrini claimed the 200-meter freestyle gold with a world record and Michael Phelps secured eight gold medals—the Water Cube was converted into a curling venue for the 2022 Winter Games. The competition and warm-up pools will now be temporarily transformed into 25-meter short course basins ahead of official training on November 27.
