USA Defeats Sweden in Overtime, Advances in Hockey Tournament | Olympics 2024

The United States men’s hockey team defeated Sweden 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday to advance to the semi-finals of the Milan Olympic tournament. The decisive goal came from Quinn Hughes at 4:00 of the extra period, securing the win after a hard-fought contest.

The game remained scoreless through two periods before Dylan Larkin broke the deadlock at 32:00. Larkin redirected a shot from Jack Hughes, with a primary assist also credited to Quinn Hughes, giving the Americans a 1-0 lead.

With time winding down in the third period, Sweden pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Mika Zibanejad capitalized on the opportunity, scoring with 91 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game 1-1 and force overtime.

In overtime, Hughes secured the victory with a shot that eluded Swedish goaltender Jacob Markström. Hughes’ performance was pivotal, contributing both a goal and an assist.

U.S. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was instrumental in the win, stopping 28 of 29 shots faced. Markström, on the Swedish side, made 38 saves on 40 shots.

The American victory follows earlier quarter-final results on Wednesday. Slovakia defeated Germany 6-2, while Canada overcame a 2-3 deficit to win 4-3 in overtime against the Czech Republic. Finland also secured a spot in the semi-finals with a 3-2 overtime win over Switzerland.

Latvia’s Olympic journey concluded in tenth place after a 1-5 loss to Sweden in the qualification round. The return of National Hockey League (NHL) players to the Olympic tournament occurred after a 12-year absence. Finland won the previous Olympic hockey tournament.

According to reports, Jack Hughes of the U.S. Team previously sustained an injury, and his availability remains uncertain. He was unable to finish the previous game due to the injury, which occurred during a Novel Jersey Devils game against the Nashville Predators on January 31st. He suffered a lower-body injury.
