A chorus of criticism from both sides of the aisle is mounting against Donald Trump’s plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, posting on X, stated that “Putin made President Trump look like an idiot for the entire year,” adding, “if his administrators care more about appeasing Putin than obtaining peace, the president should find new advisors.” McConnell characterized the plan as a “reward [for] the Russian massacre” and “disastrous for American interests.”

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, asserted that the American proposal resembled “the plan of putin.” She argued the U.S. should instead “increase the pressure on Putin, provide long-range weapons, impose secondary sanctions on companies that fuel the Russian war machine and bring Putin at the negotiating table to discuss seriously.” Shaheen emphasized, “We should not represent Russia in this agreement.”

Republican Senator Roger Wicker expressed skepticism about the 28-point plan’s ability to achieve peace, stating, “Ukraine should not be forced to cede its territories to one of the world’s most notorious war criminals, Vladimir Putin.” He added,”And no guarantees given to Putin should reward his malicious behavior or compromise the security of the United States or its allies.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton labeled Trump’s plan an “ultimatum for Ukraine to capitulate to Russia,” estimating on X that it “betrays peace, freedom and justice.”

Adding to the criticism, Republican Senator J.D. Vance denounced what he called the “fantasy” of achieving victory thru “more money, more weapons or more sanctions.”
