Sabalenko Reaches US Open Final, Eyes First Grand Slam Title
NEW YORK – Aryna Sabalenko has advanced to teh US Open final, defeating Karolína Muchová in a hard-fought three-set semifinal match. The 24-year-old Belarusian will face the winner of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner for the championship title at Flushing Meadows.
Sabalenko’s path to the final saw her drop only one set through the first three rounds, including a victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia in the round of sixteen. A highly anticipated quarterfinal rematch against Iga Świątek, a repeat of their Wimbledon encounter, resulted in a decisive win for Sabalenko with a score of 6-4, 6-3 – a stark contrast to the 0-6, 0-6 losses she suffered in June.
The semifinal against Muchová proved to be a grueling contest. Sabalenko lost the first set in a tiebreak, but battled back to win the second in another tiebreak, and ultimately secured the third set 6-3. A victory in the final woudl mark sabalenko’s first Grand Slam title, capping off a breakthrough year that already includes a triumph at the WTA 1000 event in Doha, qatar, and her debut in the top ten of the world rankings. Sabalenko, currently ranked ninth in the world, has never before reached the third round at the US Open.
