U.S. Naval Academy on Lockdown Following Incident Involving Former Midshipman
Annapolis, MD – The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was placed on lockdown earlier today after a former midshipman reportedly returned to campus armed with a weapon. Initial reports of gunshots fired inside Bancroft Hall, the academy’s dormitory, prompted a swift response from law enforcement and emergency medical personnel.
According to multiple sources within the Naval Academy, the individual involved had previously been separated from the school. The situation unfolded rapidly, with early reports indicating multiple casualties. Though, an internal email from Capt. David Forman, deputy commandant of midshipmen, clarified that a midshipman mistakenly identified authorized law enforcement officers as a threat and was afterward injured during an engagement. The midshipman is currently stable and receiving medical attention.
authorities are also investigating reports that the suspect was impersonating a military police officer, allegedly “knocking on doors pretending to be a military policeman,” according to one official on campus.
The incident comes amidst heightened security concerns following a separate shooting at Fort Stewart in Georgia, where five soldiers were injured and a suspect is in custody.
