UN Calls for De-escalation Following US Operations Near Venezuela
The United Nations has expressed concern over heightened tensions in the southern Caribbean Sea following recent military operations conducted by the United States between September 2nd and october 3rd. Briefing the Security Council, UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča reported that the operations have drawn strong criticism from Venezuelan authorities.
According to US officials, the strikes targeted vessels in international waters suspected of carrying illegal drugs destined for the United States. Reports indicate a total of 21 fatalities resulting from the operations, begining wiht an initial incident on September 2nd that reportedly caused eleven deaths. However, the UN has noted it is unable to independently verify these reports, as the precise locations of the incidents remain undisclosed.
venezuela maintains the US actions constitute a violation of its sovereignty and a provocative act. In a letter to the Security council dated October 9th, Venezuela’s UN representative alleged the operations are intended to further US policies aimed at regime change.Caracas has also reported instances of US fighter jet overflights near its coastline and the detention of a Venezuelan fishing boat within its territorial waters. The US, in turn, has reported that two Venezuelan military aircrafts flew over a US Navy vessel in international waters.
In response to the escalating situation, Venezuelan authorities have announced a heightened state of alert and mobilized 4.5 million members of the Bolivarian Militia to support the armed forces.
The UN has repeatedly urged both the United States and Venezuela to exercise restraint and pursue peaceful resolutions to thier differences. Mr. jenča emphasized that counter-narcotics efforts “must be carried out in accordance with international law, including the UN charter,” and any use of force must adhere to established human rights standards.
Acknowledging the devastating impact of transnational organized crime, the UN reiterated its commitment to supporting diplomatic dialog and preventative measures. The organization continues to emphasize the importance of all counter-crime efforts being conducted within the framework of international law and calls on both Washington and Caracas to prioritize de-escalation and constructive engagement.
