US Justice Dept. Sues UCLA Over Alleged Antisemitism During Pro-Palestinian Protests

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the University of California system, alleging that the university allowed a “hostile” environment to flourish for Jewish and Israeli students during pro-Palestinian demonstrations in 2024. The lawsuit focuses specifically on events that unfolded on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, the largest of the ten universities within the UC system.

According to the Justice Department, UCLA administrators failed to adequately address antisemitic behavior that occurred during the protests, which took place against the backdrop of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. “Based on our investigations, UCLA administrators are accused of allowing virulent antisemitism to thrive on campus, harming students and staff,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi in a press release.

The lawsuit seeks a court order compelling the UC system to remedy the alleged failures and to provide financial compensation to those who were affected. The action follows a demand from the U.S. Government for a $1 billion penalty related to the 2024 protests, a figure California Governor Gavin Newsom described as “extortion” during a book promotion event in New York. Newsom further criticized former President Trump for wielding his authority “like a weapon every day.”

The legal challenge represents a continuation of the Trump administration’s broader campaign against American universities, accusing them of permitting pro-Palestinian activism to devolve into antisemitism. Trump previously alleged that universities were facilitating “grossly antisemitic acts” on their campuses. The current lawsuit builds on those earlier accusations.

The University of California system is widely regarded as the premier public higher education system in the United States, known for its academic rigor and research output. The state of California is the most populous and economically powerful in the nation.

The Justice Department’s complaint alleges specific instances of discriminatory conduct and a hostile climate, but details of those incidents have not been publicly released. The UC system has not yet issued a formal response to the lawsuit, and its next steps remain unclear.
