U.S. to Designate Maduro-Linked Cartel of the Suns as Terrorist Association
WASHINGTON – The United States will formally designate the Cartel of the suns,a criminal organization allegedly led by venezuelan regime figures including those close to Nicolás Maduro,as a terrorist organization,Senator Marco Rubio announced today. The move signals escalating U.S. pressure on Maduro’s government amid a deepening political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.
The designation, which Rubio said is imminent, aims to disrupt the financial networks and operations of the Cartel of the Suns, accused of drug trafficking, money laundering, and violence. This action reflects growing U.S. concern over the alleged involvement of high-ranking Venezuelan officials in criminal activities that destabilize the region and threaten national security. It also comes as the Trump administration weighs further options, including potential military intervention, to oust Maduro from power.
The Cartel of the Suns is accused of trafficking thousands of kilograms of cocaine, primarily to the United States and Europe, generating ample profits used to sustain Maduro’s regime. According to reports, the organization has been linked to at least 83 deaths in recent weeks. However, authorities have not yet publicly provided evidence regarding those on board vessels allegedly targeted by the cartel.
Legal experts have cautioned that attacks carried out by the Cartel of the Suns could potentially violate international law.
President Donald Trump has indicated he has “more or less” reached a decision regarding further action toward Venezuela, but has not yet disclosed details. The potential for U.S. military strikes against targets within Venezuela has been widely discussed in recent days.
