US Campaign to Dismantle the International Criminal Court Gains Allies in Africa and Latin America

The withdrawals followed a diplomatic push from Washington aimed at dismantling an institution that the United States argues harms its national interests and those of its ally Israel, despite the U.S. not being a member.

The Diplomatic Push From Washington and Sudden Exits

Four days after that outreach, East African nation Chad announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court. Chad has been a member of the tribunal since 2007. In its official reasoning, the government in N’Djamena stated that the court operates with a selective focus directed heavily toward the global south.

On July 24, Venezuela notified the international community that it was also abandoning the tribunal. Caracas was historically the very first Latin American nation to join the court when it opened its doors in 2002. Venezuelan officials justified the departure by asserting that the institution perpetuates a systematic persecution against the Venezuelan people.

According to official statements, both decisions received an immediate and open welcome from the United States government. Washington has made no secret of its ongoing campaign to undermine and dismantle the tribunal.
