VIVA – Scientists managed to find two fossil species that took them by surprise. Both were found in two different countries.
Scientists from the University of Tubingen, Germany identify fossil species mysterious crocodile long snout that they believed had never been seen before. This fossil was found from a site in Na Duong, Vietnam.
As quoted from the site MashableThursday, May 26, 2022, part of the discovery of a long-beaked gharial crocodile called Maomingosuchus acutirostris which is thought to have lived between 35 and 39 million years ago.
This species is spread from North Africa to Western Europe, then to Southeast Asia. Based on the findings of a study published in the Journal of Systematic Palaentology, the bones of this mysterious crocodile are up to 4 meters long.
The descendants of this crocodile are Tomistoma schlegelii which is found in the Malay Peninsula, Kalimantan, Sumatra and Java, and Gavialis gangeticus in Nepal and India. Unfortunately, both of these species are classified as endangered.
Even so, it is not clear enough for a definite link between Maomingosuchus acutirostris and modern crocodile species today. The German scientist also still can not confirm the genetic relationship between the two.
However, they believe, despite having a habitat in Southeast Asia 39 million years ago, crocodile species have existed for much longer. Beginning 50 million years ago in West Tethys which is now the Mediterranean Sea.
