UN office and York Castle alumni donate over $3m in computers to St Ann schools

St. Ann Schools Receive Technology Boost from Alumni Initiative

Ten primary and basic schools in St. Ann, Jamaica, along with York Castle High School, are now better equipped with educational technology following a significant donation valued at over $3 million.

Empowering Foundational Education

The substantial contribution of laptops and desktops was made possible through a partnership between the New York Chapter of the York Castle Alumni Association and the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) Logistics Programme. The initiative aims to enhance technology access for students at the crucial early stages of their education.

Direct Impact on Learning

During a recent handover ceremony, school administrators, community members, students, and alumni representatives witnessed the distribution of new equipment. Brown’s Town Primary, Brown’s Town Infant, Servite Primary, Clarksonville Primary, Muir House Primary and Junior High School, and Charlton Primary School each received two desktop computers and two laptops. Additionally, Bamboo Basic School, Clarksonville Basic School, Runaway Bay Basic School, and Orange Hill Basic School were each provided with one desktop and one laptop computer.

York Castle High Enhances Digital Capabilities

York Castle High School itself received a major influx of technology, with 34 desktop computers and 34 laptops designated to support its student body and ongoing digital learning projects.

“This is more than just a donation of equipment. It is an investment in the future of our children and in the growth of our educational system. These devices will help enhance learning, support digital literacy, and empower both students and educators across St Ann.”

Dwight Clarke, President of the York Castle Alumni Association – NY Chapter

Dwight Clarke, president of the York Castle Alumni Association’s New York Chapter, expressed deep gratitude to the OICT Logistics programme for its generosity. He also lauded the dedication of educators who are instrumental in shaping the next generation of leaders.

Bridging the Digital Divide

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to close the digital divide in education. Globally, access to technology is increasingly vital for academic success. For instance, a 2023 UNESCO report highlighted that improved digital literacy skills are correlated with higher student engagement and better learning outcomes across various subjects.

The donation benefits schools located within St. Ann Parish, Jamaica.

The presence of Olympic gold medalist and York Castle alumnus Deon Hemmings-McCatty, alongside Vice Principal of Brown’s Town Primary School Devon McDonald, underscored the community’s shared commitment to educational advancement.
