Ukrainians Signal Willingness for ceasefire, Despite Fears of Renewed russian Attack

Kyiv, ukraine – A new survey reveals a growing acceptance among Ukrainians for a potential ceasefire along current front lines, even while maintaining deep skepticism about Russia‘s long-term intentions. The findings, released today by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), highlight a pragmatic shift in public opinion as the war with Russia enters a protracted phase.

The survey indicates that three out of four Ukrainians are prepared to accept a ceasefire under specific conditions: security guarantees for Ukraine, a non-resistance stance toward currently occupied territories, and the continued enforcement of sanctions against Russia. This willingness for negotiation, though, exists alongside a stark reality – a majority, 56 percent, believe Russian President Vladimir Putin would likely re-attack Ukraine even if a ceasefire were implemented. the data underscores a complex calculus for ukrainians, balancing the desire to end the immediate conflict with a profound distrust of Moscow.

According to the KIIS report, a majority of Ukrainians believe victory is absolutely possible with continued Western support. Researchers did not survey sentiment regarding potential victory without such support. The findings reflect a challenging situation where, as analysts note, a radical shift in political or military dynamics is needed to break the current stalemate and avoid an extended conflict.

The survey data arrives as Ukraine faces continued pressure at the front, as detailed in recent reporting. The acceptance of a ceasefire, even a tentative one, presents a potential disruption to Putin’s strategic goals, given Ukrainians’ simultaneous expectation of future aggression.
