A Spiritual Shift in the UK: Bible Sales Surge to Record highs
Growing evidence suggests a spiritual awakening is underway in the united Kingdom. Reports of young people seeking healing, freedom, and deliverance in churches are now accompanied by new research revealing that Bible sales in the region have reached their highest point since 2008.
Record-Breaking Bible Sales in 2025
SPCK Group, a leading Christian publisher, reported total UK Bible sales of £6.3 million in 2025.This represents a record annual figure, more than doubling the sales value recorded in 2019. Specifically, Bible sales increased by 134 percent in value and 106 percent in volume.
“This is further evidence of a notable cultural shift regarding matters of faith and religion in this country,” says Sam Richardson, CEO of SPCK Group.
Richardson attributes this trend to a broader context of global change. “As we face worldwide political and social change, including the after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, global wars, the rise of AI, and a growing mental health crisis, individuals are re-engaging with questions of meaning and spirituality,” he explains. “Atheism, which seemed to be the default choice of Generation X, does not carry the same weight and appeal with younger generations.”
Reversing a Decades-Long decline
For decades,Christianity appeared to be in decline in the UK,with increasing hostility towards the faith. The 2021 census revealed that less than half (46.2%) of people in England and Wales identified as Christian, a significant drop from the 70% who did so in 2001.
Though,recent data indicates a reversal of this trend. A Bible Society report shows a substantial increase in church attendance among Gen Z. Attendance rose from around 4% to 16%,with young men showing a particularly dramatic increase from 4% to 21%.
Now, these shifts in attendance are being reflected in Bible sales.
A Search for Meaning and Truth
“The significant and sustained upward trend in Bible sales suggests that more and more people are investigating the Christian faith themselves and seeking to draw their own conclusions about its truth,” Richardson stated.
Christian booksellers are also observing this change firsthand.Aude Pasquier, retail sales director at Church House bookshop near Westminster Abbey, noted to the Guardian, “We’ve seen an increase in people coming to the Bible from scratch. They have no Christian background whatsoever… Whereas most people in prior generations would have.”
Pasquier added, “It’s definitely younger people who are seeking some sort of spirituality – they want to understand the world and themselves better.”
A Transatlantic Trend
This resurgence of interest in faith isn’t limited to the UK. Similar trends are emerging in the United States.
As of November 2025, American Bible sales saw an 11% increase, totaling 18 million copies sold. This continues the Bible’s long-standing position as the best-selling book of all time.
CBN’s Billy Hallowell and Raj Nair discussed this growing trend, noting the anecdotal evidence of young people embracing faith. “That tells us that [there is] this thirst for knowledge and truth,” Hallowell explained. “when we see it on college campuses, when we see young people flooding up to basically give their lives to the Lord… there’s a bigger narrative.”
Hallowell concluded, “Not only are people saying that they’re accepting the Lord, but they’re also going out to buy Bibles, physical copies of the Bible, to reaffirm that belief.”
