UGM Students Boat Tragedy: 1 Dead, 7 Rescued in Maluku

A tragic boat accident involving Gadjah Mada university (UGM) students has occurred in Southeast Maluku Regency,indonesia,on tuesday,July 1,2025. The boat, carrying seven students, capsized near Dutu Dutuan Village, Sorbai District, resulting in one confirmed fatality and one missing person. Search and rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing student.

Details of the Incident

According to Muhamad Arafat, Head of Basarnas Ambon, five students were found safe following the incident. The students were participating in a KKN (Kuliah Kerja Nyata) program, a form of community service common in Indonesian universities. The incident took place approximately 22.1 nautical miles from the PSDKP port, with the accident site about 1.5 hours away by boat.

Wawan, a local resident, reported that the boat capsized after the students collected sand material on Wahr Island around 2:07 PM. High waves are believed to have contributed to the boat overturning as it returned. The boat was carrying both students and local residents.

Search and Rescue Efforts

The SAR team has been deployed to the location to search for the missing UGM student. Local residents and fishermen are also assisting in the search efforts. As of now, the search is ongoing, with hopes of finding the missing student.

Casualties and Evacuation

The deceased student has been evacuated to Karel Regional Hospital in Southeast Maluku.The five surviving students are receiving necessary assistance. The identity of the deceased and missing student has not yet been released.

Sadly, this is not the first time indonesian students have been involved in water-related accidents. In October 2021, eleven students drowned during a school outing for a river cleanup in West java [[2]]. These incidents highlight the importance of safety measures during student activities, especially those involving water.
