Ubisoft Far Cry TV Show Adaptation Leaks at FX

Breaking: A television adaptation of the popular video game franchise Far Cry is reportedly in development at FX, according to leaked information circulating online. While FX and Ubisoft have not officially confirmed the project, details from a now-removed Ubisoft press release suggest a notable production is underway.

The planned series will adopt an anthology format, mirroring the standalone nature of the Far Cry games. Each season will feature a new setting and cast of characters, offering a fresh narrative experience while staying true to the franchise’s core identity. This approach allows for exploration of the diverse locales and themes present throughout the game series, which has sold over 75 million units worldwide since its debut in 2004.

The project is reportedly co-created by Rob McElhenney, best known for his work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Noah Hawley, the creative force behind critically acclaimed FX series Fargo and Legion. hawley is expected to serve as showrunner and executive producer, with McElhenney also taking on an executive producer role. The leaked press release indicated that the series will be a collaboration between FX Productions and Ubisoft Film & Television, the latter of which is also involved in adaptations of Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.

The success of recent video game adaptations, such as Amazon’s Fallout, which premiered in April 2024 and quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched shows, and HBO’s The Last of Us, which garnered 24 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations in 2023, demonstrates a growing audience appetite for these types of projects. Hawley’s track record of blending genre elements with dark humor and complex characters aligns well with the tone established in many Far Cry titles, notably Far Cry 3 (2012) and Far Cry 5 (2018).

The original Ubisoft press release appeared briefly on the company’s news website before being removed, with the site now redirecting to a general news landing page.Information about the project surfaced initially through reports on websites like Engadget and was later discussed extensively on platforms like Reddit, specifically the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit. As of May 16, 2024, neither FX nor Ubisoft has issued an official statement regarding the adaptation.
