Uber Driver Faces Long Recovery After Alleged Stabbing at Gold Coast Shopping Centre
A 32-year-old Uber driver is facing a potentially life-altering recovery after an alleged attack at Coomera Westfield two weeks ago. Police report the driver was dropping off a 16-year-old passenger when the teenager allegedly attempted to strangle her with a seatbelt before stabbing her ten times in the face, back, and neck.
the driver was discovered several hours later by a passing security guard and transported to hospital with a punctured lung and paralysis. Her father stated she was “immobilised in the vehicle whilst under attack” and suffering from multiple stab wounds and facial injuries.
Family members, including her father and brother, have travelled from overseas to support her during her recovery. The family expressed profound gratitude to the security guard whose fast actions they believe saved her life. “We feel his actions definitely saved our daughter’s life,” her father told 9News.
The driver, who has not been publicly identified, was working two jobs to save money for her visa and had postponed plans to visit family in Brazil.
“She is facing a long term recovery with life-changing injuries,” her father said. While doctors have not yet determined if she will regain the ability to walk, the family is focusing on her well-being.
“The primary thing is for her to get well and the next thing is to get justice,” her brother stated.
The accused attacker is scheduled to appear in court next month.
