HONG KONG – Hong Kong and parts of southern China are working to recover after Typhoon Ragasa brought widespread flooding and disruption,with clean-up efforts underway and transport gradually returning to normal.
The powerful storm caused huge waves to crash over eastern and southern shorelines in Hong Kong on Wednesday, submerging roads and residential properties. Seawater surged into the Fullerton hotel, shattering glass doors and flooding the lobby, though no injuries were reported and the hotel stated services were operating as normal.
In Taiwan, mud-covered areas were left in the wake of the typhoon’s flooding. Nearby, a home goods seller named Nie attempted to salvage sodden toothpaste boxes, lamenting the economic hardship. “Since the pandemic, it’s been extremely difficult to run a business,” Nie said. “Everything we do is at a loss … And now you come in and there’s nothing.”
Hong Kong’s Airport Authority announced airlines would gradually resume flights on Thursday,with all three runways operating concurrently. Authorities are urgently repairing collapsed roads, clearing over 1,000 fallen trees, and responding to approximately 85 cases of flooding.Clean-up efforts have also begun in Guangdong Province after torrential rain subsided.
