Tropical Storm Wipha Strengthens, Threatens Southern China Coast
Taiwan Faces Disruptions as Storm Eyes Mainland Landing
A powerful tropical storm, Wipha, is intensifying and is expected to reach typhoon strength before making landfall on China’s southern coast Sunday. The storm has already caused significant disruption in Taiwan, leading to flight and ferry cancellations.
Storm’s Path and Impact
Wipha recently traversed the Philippines, where high winds toppled a large billboard-like structure in Quezon City, crushing a parked truck. As it passed south of Taiwan on Saturday, the storm registered maximum sustained winds of 101 kph with gusts up to 126 kph.
Taiwan’s east coast counties, Hualien and Taitung, experienced rainfall exceeding 20 centimeters. Authorities suspended 14 ferry routes and cancelled several domestic flights due to hazardous sea conditions and strong gales.
Cross-Strait Disruptions
Across the Taiwan Strait, ferry services were also halted in Fujian province along China’s eastern coastline, underscoring the widespread impact of the approaching weather system. Last year, Typhoon Doksuri caused significant damage and evacuations across East Asia. For instance, it disrupted transport and agriculture in Vietnam, impacting approximately 100,000 people according to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR 2023).
