Mumbai police have arrested television actress Anushka Das, formerly known as Calcutta Moon Das, for allegedly running a prostitution racket. Two women were rescued in the operation conducted by the Mumbai Crime branch.
The arrest, made under sections 143(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (trafficking of persons), and sections 4 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, highlights ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and exploitation within the entertainment industry.this case underscores the vulnerability of individuals and the potential for abuse,even among those with public profiles. Police Sub-Inspector Anil Pawar registered the FIR, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Madan Ballal confirmed Das has been handed over to the concerned police station.
Das’s past is marked by tragedy. In November 2007, her mother and maternal uncle were killed by her then-boyfriend, Avinash Bhupen Patnaik, who subsequently died by suicide after being unable to locate Das at her Andheri flat. Following the incident, Das changed her name and attempted to revive her career in modeling and television.
