Turkiye Seeks Interpol Warrant for Netanyahu Over Global Sumud Flotilla Attack
Turkiye has sought an international arrest warrant through Interpol for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of genocide, crimes against humanity, and torture following a May military interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza, according to statements released by Turkish officials.
The Diplomatic Escalation Over the Global Sumud Flotilla
The diplomatic rift between Ankara and Jerusalem deepened when Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced via social media post on X that Turkish authorities had formally requested Interpol red notices for Netanyahu and another suspect. The warrants stem from a domestic case against 35 people initiated after Israeli forces opened fire in international waters on at least two vessels participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla in May.
About 50 vessels were in the Global Sumud Flotilla that left Turkiye in May to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. Following the interception, Israeli military personnel detained activists in the Mediterranean Sea, transporting them to an Israeli prison before deportation. The military action drew international outcry, triggering separate judicial proceedings in France, Italy, and Australia.
According to Justice Minister Akin Gurlek, Turkish courts issued domestic arrest warrants on July 14 against Netanyahu and another suspect. Gurlek stated that Turkiye intends to utilize every available legal mechanism to hold Israel accountable, asserting that Ankara will not allow actions in Gaza to be shielded by impunity.
Political Retaliation and Counter-Accusations
The Netanyahu administration rejected the move outright. In a statement, the Israeli Prime Minister’s office dismissed the legal action as a pathetic attempt by Turkish President Erdogan to intimidate Israeli soldiers and leaders. The office labeled Israel the only true democracy in the Middle East, accused Erdogan of antisemitism, and vowed to counter Turkish efforts to destabilize the region.

Shortly after the Israeli response, Erdogan’s office released a counter-statement on X condemning what it described as Netanyahu’s petty political tactics. Ankara maintained that the Israeli government was attempting to frame Turkiye as a new threat.
The Long-Term Impact on Regional Stability
As a NATO member, Turkiye has positioned itself as one of the fiercest critics of Israel’s war in Gaza, repeatedly demanding international measures for alleged violations of human rights and international law. Israel has consistently denied those charges.
