Cargo Ship Bound for Russia Ablaze in Black Sea After Suspected Drone Attack

August 21, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The vessel, carrying fresh fruit and vegetables from Turkey to Russia, caught fire, forcing the evacuation of all 22 crew members, with four sustaining injuries according to regional reporting.

Escalating Maritime Risks in the Black Sea Corridor

Operated by Samsun-based Kalyoncu Shipping, the 118-meter vessel was targeted around mid-afternoon central European time. According to the Turkish daily Türkiye, the ship’s captain, Yalçın Şahin, asserted that six or seven drones were involved in the strike, though this detail remains unverified by independent monitors. The Turkish Maritime Authority confirmed that a fire continued to burn on the vessel’s bow following the impact.

Evacuation Logistics and Regional Rescue Operations

According to regional reports cited by Reuters, incoming Russian vessels dispatched to assist the stricken crew encountered navigational interference from ongoing drone activity in the vicinity. The 22 evacuated crew members—which included three Turkish citizens among the four injured—were transported safely to Russian territory for medical evaluation.

Ukrainian authorities have consistently maintained that Moscow utilizes Black Sea commercial transit corridors to transport cargo subject to international sanctions, including petroleum products. Conversely, Russian forces have repeatedly struck port infrastructure and grain-carrying vessels heading toward Ukrainian terminals, such as a late-July strike near Odessa that resulted in ten fatalities aboard a Guinean-Bissau-flagged corn carrier.
