Istanbul hotel Inquiry Follows Family Tragedy
A German-based Turkish family’s vacation in Istanbul ended in tragedy this week after a mother and two of her children died, and the father remains in critical condition. The family fell ill Wednesday after being in the area of the Bosphorus Bridge. Initial reports focused on the possibility of food poisoning from street vendors, wiht various media outlets speculating on potential causes.
Though, an investigation has revealed a different potential source of the illness.Authorities discovered the family’s first-floor hotel room in Istanbul’s Fatih district had recently undergone pesticide treatment. This discovery prompted the evacuation of all guests from the hotel to other accommodations, according to BirGun newspaper.
Two additional hotel guests were hospitalized Saturday with symptoms of nausea and vomiting, though their condition remains less clear.
Police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the case, including a hotel employee and two pest control officers. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the family’s illness and ensure accountability. The children who died were six and three years old; their mother passed away a day after they did, according to the Justice Minister. The father’s condition was reported as critical Friday evening by the Istanbul Regional Health Directorate via platform “X.”
