Tsunami updates live: waves hit US west coast as alerts downgraded in Japan and Hawaii after earthquake off Russian coast | Earthquakes

A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake has struck the pacific Ocean, triggering tsunami alerts for several island nations and coastal regions, including Japan and Russia.

The seismic event occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and its epicenter was located 230 kilometers (143 miles) east of the Solomon Islands, according to the United states Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake’s magnitude was initially reported as 7.9 before being revised to 8.0.

Following the earthquake, the pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, and Wallis and Futuna. The Joint Australian tsunami Warning Center also issued a tsunami threat for Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, and the entire coast of New South Wales.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. However, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents in affected coastal areas to be prepared for potential tsunami waves.

Earthquakes of this magnitude can generate widespread and dangerous tsunami waves that can travel across entire ocean basins. The impact of a tsunami depends on various factors, including the earthquake’s depth, the type of fault rupture, and the local bathymetry (underwater topography).
